Description
The Memorial Hall at Rydal School in Colwyn Bay is a two-storey building constructed from coursed and squared sandstone rubble, topped with plain tiled roofs. It has an L-shaped plan with a low corner tower at the angle and features simplified Tudor detailing. On the courtyard side, the northern range includes a gable at its western angle, which is complemented by a canted bay window with mullioned and transomed lights, along with paired windows above. Adjacent to this is a cloister with five bays, showcasing small two and three-light mullioned windows on the upper storey, and a high parapet. The western-facing range mirrors this design, featuring three sets of three-light mullioned and transomed windows on the ground floor and similar windows above. A segmentally arched doorway on the right leads into a broad through-passage that serves as the lobby for the Memorial Hall.
The street-facing elevations display more intricate detailing, with wide mullioned and transomed windows in each bay, separated by blind traceried panels. The corner tower is accentuated by angle buttresses and oriel windows on two sides, topped with an embattled parapet. The Memorial Hall itself has three high-set lights on its left, adorned with a quatrefoil frieze above, and is divided into three bays by buttresses that culminate in coupled finials. Each bay features a three-tier, two-light mullioned and transomed window. To the south, a buttressed fly tower has very narrow lights and a shallow pyramidal roof set behind a parapet. The austere south-facing elevation is softened by a series of slight pilaster buttresses.
Designed as a multi-functional hall, the Memorial Hall includes a stage at the southern end beneath the fly tower, and a gallery to the north with a projection room above. The interior boasts robust original details, such as tooled stone facing as dado, some limed oak furnishings, and sturdy panelled and glazed doors. The coffered ceiling is enhanced with painted panels.
