Description
Bryn Eglwys is a two-storey building with a roughly square plan, featuring a set-back service range attached at right angles to the southeast. The exterior is made of rendered rubblestone and has slate roofs with rendered and painted brick stacks. The entrance is located on the northeast side, and the front has three bays with a central valley and twin gables. All windows are recessed 12-paned sashes with painted slate cills, except for the window above the entrance, which has 9 panes. The central gabled porch includes a segmental outer arch flanked by carved heads, with small rectangular windows on the sides, a slate floor, and an inner four-panel door, the top panels of which are now glazed.
The right side of the building features two full-height canted bays with hipped roofs and sash windows, with 12 panes in the centre and 8 panes in the splays. The rear of the building mirrors the front but lacks an entrance, and the central first-floor window also has 12 panes. The service range, positioned at right angles to the left return, has 12-paned sashes on each floor of the two-storey section and also on the front of the single-storey section.
Inside, the mid-19th century interior remains largely unaltered. The porch leads to a central passageway, with rooms on either side that have moulded cornices and original fireplaces. The left room features a Penrhyn slate fireplace with columns, while the right room has a marble fireplace, both equipped with cast-iron grates. A straight-flight staircase located in the passageway behind the left ground-floor room has stick balusters and a turned newel. Throughout the building, there are four-panel doors and panelled window shutters.
