Description

The stables at Wern are a long rectangular building dating from the 19th century, positioned on a slight slope and oriented roughly east-west. At the west end, there is a short range that extends at right angles to the south, creating a basic L-shape. The building is constructed from roughly coursed rubblestone and features a graded slate roof.

The front elevation includes stable doors on the left and offset to the right, both with painted timber lintels. There are three vertically louvered windows with slate cills and stone lintels, two located between the doorways and one to the right of the right doorway. On the rear side, there is a stable door at the far left, accompanied by a vertically louvered window immediately to its right. The left gable end has a boarded door that is accessed by external stone steps. The right gable end features a window at the upper level and a boarded hatch at the lower level. This wall continues to form the west wall of the short range, which has two windows directly below the eaves, along with a boarded hatch located below and between them. The east wall of the short range contains a stable door on the left and a vertically louvered window on the right.

Inside, the section to the right is open to the roof and showcases two large pegged A-frame trusses with massive ties that appear to be cut off near the ends, as well as additional scissor bracing. The section to the left contains 19th-century stable partitions and a hayloft above, supported by a central king-post truss. The short range features a 19th-century roof structure.
