Description
The stables at Top Farm, located about 8 meters east of the house, are possibly from the 15th century, with some 18th-century features and minor alterations from the 19th century. The building is constructed of squared, coursed stone on the ground floor and gables, with weatherboarding on studs on the first floor, topped with a thatched roof. It has a five-window range and is one room deep, standing at one and a half storeys.
On the side facing the house, the left end is made of stone up to the eaves, while the right side features a boarded first-floor section that begins below a boarded door with a timber lintel. To the right, there is a boarded stable door with a glazed light above it, leading into the boarded section above. The stone wall has double boarded doors, and there are two six-pane windows under timber lintels, with a blocked doorway to the left.
The right return has a boarded stable door on the left at ground level and a central boarded door on the first floor, both with timber lintels. Above, there is a half hip. The interior is lofted from the right end to the left of the double doors, featuring a tie beam truss with collar and angle struts, slight braces to the wall posts, and two pairs of purlins with a square ridge. The left end of the stables and the store is unlofted and separated by a cruck truss with a yoke at the apex and a collar, originally having wattle and daub infill. This building forms a group with the house.
