Description
Top Farm Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the 17th century, with an extension added around 1930 and alterations made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed from roughly squared, coursed stone and features a stone slate roof. It has a four-window front and is one room deep, standing 2 and a half storeys tall, with a rear wing that forms a T plan.
The front of the farmhouse includes stone-mullioned windows with plain chamfers and hoodmoulds. To the left, near the corner, there is a 2-light window, and next to it, a 4-light window with a king mullion situated above a boarded door. This door is accessed by a single stone step and has a deep stone lintel with a very flat arch on the underside, also featuring a hoodmould. The lintel is marked with 'T S 16 + 1775' in pecked holes. To the right, there is another 4-light window with a king mullion and double French doors, which also have a hoodmould.
On the first floor, there are 2-light windows at each end and two 3-light windows in the middle. The left end has a parapet gable with four gabled dormers that contain 2-light casements, while the right end has a parapet gable with a ridge chimney. There are additional ridge chimneys to the right of the front door and one bay from the left end, all featuring moulded caps.
Inside, the farmhouse has a wide fireplace with a timber lintel located in the chimneys to the right and left of the front door. The farmhouse forms a group with the stables nearby. The house was extended by one bay on the right side around 1930 to match the original structure.
