Description

Hillylees Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the late 19th century. It is constructed of coursed stone and features a blue machine tile roof, with verge parapets that have moulded copings at the left end and shaped kneelers. There are two corniced ridge stacks on the right and a stack in the valley on the left. The building has a 'T'-shaped plan with two parallel ranges and an attached wing that extends to the west, forming the stem of the 'T'.

The front facade has five windows and is two storeys high, divided into two parts. To the left, there are two projecting gables; the outer gable, which is slightly smaller and agricultural in nature, has a two-light chamfer mullion window on the first floor. Below this, there is a coach entry with a sharply cranked lintel to the left of centre, and a further door to the right, with a window in between. The larger gable on the right features a 19th-century five-light chamfer mullion lattice casement window on the first floor and a mid-19th-century hipped bay window on the ground floor.

A pent-porch is set in the return angle of the set-back right-hand range, which has three windows. The windows here are mainly 19th-century casements, except for a four-light chamfer mullion window next to the porch and a 17th-century reveal for a single light window adjacent to the right. Stone steps lead to the first floor on the east side. The farmhouse retains a byre and barn that are attached parallel to the parlour cross wing, which is adjoined by a hall range that was extended in the 19th century.
