Description
The stables at Middle Farm, dating from the 17th century and altered in the early 19th century, are now used as housing for cattle. The building is constructed of small coursed, squared stone with ashlar or near ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof. It has six bays and is one and a half storeys high.
The facade facing the yard includes a plinth and an oval window made from four stones arranged in a rectangle, along with a boarded door that has a chamfered surround and a four-centred arch. There is a similar window to the right. To the right, there is a shallow, projecting wing with a blocked door that has been reduced to a window with a timber lintel on the left, while the right side of this wing sets back, featuring a door and an oval window. Above this wing, there is a pitching hole with a three-piece stone lintel and a diagonally-set square opening in the gable, which is too small to be an owlhole. The gable ends and the cross wing have parapets, and the cross-gablet apices are also present.
Internally, there is one room in part of the left end, while the remainder consists of a single room. The projection towards the road does not register internally on the ground floor. The roof structure includes collar rafter trusses, two pairs of purlins, and a plank ridge. This single-storey 17th-century building is a rare survival, having been altered by raising the eaves and adding a loft in the 19th century.
