Description

The Townsend monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard, approximately 2.5 meters south of the south-east corner of the chancel at the Church of St Edward. It dates from 1701 and is made of stone. The tomb features a thick, flat lid with a moulded edge. The north side has moulding around each panel, with a wide central panel designated for an inscription, and floral designs on the side panels, while the end panels are plain and narrow. The south side is plain but includes moulding around the central section. The ends of the tomb are plain with a moulded edge, and there is a bronze plaque on the end that records all inscriptions. This monument commemorates Richard and Mary, the children of George Townsend.
