Description
The Baylis monument is a pedestal tomb located in the churchyard, about 3.5 meters south of the center of the chancel of the Church of St Edward in Hawling. It commemorates Ann and Isaac Baylis, who both died in 1763. The tomb is made of stone and features an eroded cone top with a steep, square gadrooned dome and a moulded top to the lid. The frieze has swags below, with a panel outlined by leaf carving on the north and south sides, and recessed with a moulded edge on the east and west sides. There is a carved narrow strip below on each side. The corners of the tomb have angled 'buttresses' with scrolls, a cherub's head, and further scrolls below. The entire monument rests on a moulded base.
