Description
The stable at No. 72 is an early 18th-century building that was refitted internally in the early 19th century. It features a timber frame and weatherboarding, topped with a hipped plain-tiled roof. The structure is one storey high, with a hay loft and dove loft above. It has an English-bond brick plinth course and the weatherboarding is painted in alternating blue and white, mostly dating from the 19th century.
The stable range has stables on the left and carriage houses on the right. The central entrance consists of a six-flush panelled door, flanked by two 12/12 horizontally sliding sash windows, with the northern window having been altered. There are two carriage houses to the north. The south side features another 12/12 horizontally sliding sash window and a pedestrian door, while the upper floor has a hay loft door with three dove holes.
On the west side, there is a full-length 19th-century outshut under a catslide roof, supported by square-section timber posts. The main wall retains early 18th-century weatherboarding, and there is a rebuilt brick stack at the south-west corner.
Inside, the south return door and window connect to the tack room. The interior includes a six-flush panelled door and a fireplace at the west end with a cast-iron stove, along with fitted cupboards on either side. The stables contain five loose boxes made of swept timber, with a cobbled floor and all internal walls boarded with planks. Each stall is equipped with feeding troughs and shuttered windows featuring circular timber mullions in the west wall. The roof consists of principal rafters with arched braces to the tie beams, along with three tiers of trenched purlins and collars.
