Description

Garden Cottage at No. 72 is a house dating from the mid-17th century. It is timber-framed and weatherboarded, topped with a plaintiled mansard roof. The cottage has one storey and a dormer attic. The south front features a two-window arrangement of two-light casements set on a rendered plinth, with the weatherboarding painted alternately blue and white. A central ridge stack is present.

On the east side, there is a four-panelled entrance door to the north, sheltered by a lean-to weatherboarded porch. Above the porch is an 18th-century leaded overlight, and there is a two-light early 18th-century casement in the attic, balanced by a two-light 20th-century casement. The north front has a full-length early 20th-century outshut made of Fletton brick, with a roof of corrugated iron. The west return has one two-light casement on each floor.

Inside, the frame consists of two cruck trusses made of thin scantling. The ground floor has two bridging beams, one in each of the two rooms, both featuring chamfers and tongue stops. A 19th-century passage was created along the north side by adding a lath and plaster wall. The east room on the ground floor has a late 19th-century cast-iron register grate, while the west room has a late 19th-century opening for a kitchen range (which has been removed) and a two-stage cupboard to its north, with panelled double doors. A winder staircase at the west end of the passage leads to two attic rooms. All four cruck blades have cruck spurs to the wall plates, from which studs descend and principal rafters rise to the roof apex, featuring straight windbracing.
