Description

Portskewett House is a two-storey house with an attic, dating from the 19th century. The exterior is completely rendered, likely over rubble stone, and features a Welsh slate roof made of scalloped slates. The main structure is a square block with a projecting two-storey porch at one end, a service wing at the rear, and a later two-storey wing added in the 20th century.

The entrance elevation has two bays, with the porch protruding from the left gable. The porch includes a decorative panelled door set in a 4-centred arch, topped with a dripmould. Above the door is a cross-framed casement window, also with a dripmould. The eaves and bargeboards are elaborately fretted. On the return elevation of the porch, there is a modern alteration featuring a French casement below and a cross-framed window above. The gable is topped with a spike finial.

The main front features two canted bay windows on the ground floor, each with fretted friezes and slate roofs. These bay windows have a configuration of 1 + 3 + 1 lights with small paned casements. Above them are 3-light windows, and the gables feature 2-light windows. The gables are also elaborately fretted and topped with spike finials. The return to the service yard includes 2-light windows and a lean-to, both of which have fretted bargeboards. The service wing is more plain, with 2-light windows and no bargeboards. The rear elevation is simple and has undergone some alterations and additions. The entrance elevation displays two bargeboarded gables in addition to the porch gable, and there is a 3-light window in the rear gable, while the front gable is blind. Most of the chimney stacks, which would have been significant features, have been removed, leaving only a small remnant on one gable.

Inside, the house features joinery, fireplaces, and plasterwork from the 1840 period, with the ground floor largely retaining its original layout. There is a spine corridor with a straight flight stair, and six panelled doors with panelled architraves. The drawing room boasts a moulded plaster cornice and a marble fireplace. The upper floors were not inspected during the resurvey.
