Description

The Old Cottage/Storehouse, located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, is a small rectangular building dating from the late medieval period. It is constructed of roughly coursed rubble stone with red brick upper walls and a pantiled roof. The entrance elevation, partly hidden by ivy, features a central 19th-century plank door set in a 19th-century opening, which indicates the current floor level. To the right, there is a low window that has been blocked, corresponding to the original floor level. Above this, a large square opening for a hayloft door is visible in the 19th-century brickwork. The two gable ends reveal the original cottage's gable, indicating that it was a low one-and-a-half storey structure. The rear elevation is blind and clearly shows the original walling along with the heightening that occurred in the 19th century. The roof is plain and lacks chimneys, reflecting the building's conversion to non-domestic use during that time.

Inside, features that remain include the fireplace and window from the original cottage, as well as the noticeable thickness of the stone walls, which highlight how the floor level was raised during the conversion. The roof structure consists of two bays with a principal truss featuring a collar, staggered purlins, secondary rafters, and a ridge piece, all intact up to the mid-19th century.
