Description

The Old Rectory is a two-storey house with an attic, built in the 18th century. It has a double depth plan with two parallel ranges that appear to be contemporary. The exterior is rendered and painted, likely over rubble stone, and features a Welsh slate roof. The quoins and dressings are also painted on both the front and rear elevations. The front elevation is a balanced five-bay design with a central entrance and a small gable above the middle bay. The arched doorway includes a fanlight and a door with six raised-and-fielded panels.

All windows are cross-framed leaded lattice casements under elliptical heads, most of which seem to be original, although the keyed architraves have been added. The plain gable features an 8-pane circular window, and the parapet has been removed. The house has tiled ridge and end gable stacks, with double gabled ends and stacks on all four gables. There is a small 4-pane window at first floor level on the west end and two small paned garret casements at the east end. The rear elevation includes a 3-light lattice window on the left, a 2-light window, and a modern casement on the right. A central cross-framed stair window is located at the half storey, with two 3-light casements on the first floor and a 2-light stair window in the attic, all featuring elliptically arched keyed heads.

Inside, the interior remains largely unaltered since the mid-19th century. The stone-paved hall leads to a striking hanging staircase with a ramped handrail, closed string, and turned balusters of an early 18th-century style, which appears to have been remodeled in the late 18th century. There is also a marble staircase from the 1840s in the Tudor Revival style located in a plaster-panelled room. The roof is an A-frame design with staggered purlins. A late 18th-century Adam type fireplace, which was removed by the last Rector to live in the house, is now in the present Rectory, although it was not seen during the resurvey.
