Description
Close House is a farmhouse that dates from the early 19th century but has origins in the 17th century, with alterations made in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The building is rendered with stone dressings and features a hipped slate roof. It has a central staircase plan and is two storeys high with three bays. The central entrance is framed by engaged Tuscan columns and an open pediment, leading to a four-panel door topped by a round-headed fanlight with intersecting tracery.
On the left side of the ground floor, there is a window with a c1900 splayed surround, featuring sashes with glazing bars. The right side of the ground floor has an early 20th-century bay window with casements. The three upper floor windows have plain surrounds and sashes with glazing bars, and there is an eaves cornice. The roof has a ridge stack to the right of centre, with additional stacks at the left and right eaves.
The right-hand return of the building is now known as Close House Cottage. At the rear, there is a 17th-century chamfered window with a round head and a leaded fixed light. Additionally, a wing projecting from the left-hand return contains a king post truss inscribed on the beam with the year 1688, attributed to Richard and Elizabeth Frankland.
