Description

The former barns to the south of Close House Cottage are two structures dating from the 17th and 19th centuries. The right-hand barn, dated 1688, has undergone some 20th-century alterations. It is built of squared rubble with stone dressings and a stone slate roof, featuring three bays. The entrance, located to the left of the center, has a chamfered surround and a basket arch made up of 11 voussoirs, with a datestone above inscribed "RE F." There is a blocked 17th-century entrance on the left with a chamfered surround and a decorated lintel, as well as a 20th-century entrance on the right. Two ground floor windows date from around 1900, and on the upper floor, there are two hayloft entrances from the same period, along with two breathers that have chamfered surrounds.

Inside, the barn features a late 17th-century king post roof.

The adjoining left-hand barn, from the 19th century, incorporates late 17th or early 18th-century chamfered stone dressings. It is also constructed of squared rubble with stone dressings and a slate roof, comprising five bays. The entrance porch is positioned to the right of the center and has a reset datestone inscribed "WF 1720." The left-hand entrance features a chamfered surround with a basket arched head, while a blocked entrance on the right has a chamfered surround with a flat arched lintel. There is a hayloft entrance to the left with a chamfered surround and flat-arched lintel, and in the left-hand return, there is a former two-light chamfered window with a missing mullion.

Inside this barn, there is a 19th-century king post roof.
