Description
Batch Farmhouse dates to the early 17th century, with alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of limestone rubble with a double Roman tiled roof, featuring raised coped verges, a stone and brick ridge, and gable stacks. The original plan comprised a through passage and two rooms, later extended to form an L-shaped layout with a wing to the front right.
The main two-storey, two-window front has 3-light casement windows with chamfered wooden mullions on both the first and ground floors, to the right. A smaller 2-pane window is located on the ground floor to the left of the entrance. A plain door sits within a chamfered frame, now protected by a 20th-century gabled porch on rough wooden piers. A two-storey wing attached to the front left incorporates two 2-light 20th-century casements on the ground floor. A single-story outhouse, contemporary with the farmhouse, is attached to the front left, having two blocked openings. The gable end of this wing features a 2-light casement to the first floor, and a stack.
The left return shows two lines of roof raising in the gable end, and a small lean-to addition. The rear of the outhouse has a door and a 2-light casement with a segmental brick head. A lean-to on the right return of the wing extends very close to ground level and contains no windows. The gable end of the main range presents a wide, weathered external stack on four corbels; beneath the stack is a 3-light casement with ovolo mullions, which was in poor condition during a survey in March 1985.
A lower rear wing has two 2-light casements of 8 panes each with brick segmental heads, and a lean-to with a door. The rear elevation features a half-glazed door to the right, a heavy door to the rear of the passage with strap hinges, chamfered frame and timber lintel, two small 2-light windows with chamfered frames and mullions and iron stanchions, a single light in a brick surround, and two 6-pane lights under the eaves. A glazed porch is located in the angled corner with the rear wing.
The rear wing, dating to the mid-19th century, is two storeys high. The ground floor of its inner side has two 2-light casements and a former central door, now replaced with a 20th-century window containing glazing bars. All openings feature brick segmental heads. The gable end of the rear wing has an external staircase leading to an upper door. The interior was not inspected.
