Description

Stone-edge Farmhouse is an early 17th-century farmhouse, later altered, located in Tickenharn. A further 17th-century wing was added as a kitchen or cider room. The construction is random limestone rubble with a pantiled roof and large stone gable stacks. Originally a two-room plan with a through passage, the house now presents an irregular front elevation with three windows. The first floor has three-light casement windows to the right and left, and a small central two-light casement, all sharing timber lintels, ovolo mullions, and frames to the right. The ground floor features a two-light casement to the left and a three-light casement to the right. A central gabled porch provides access via a half-glazed door and a heavy inner door with an inset glazed panel and a moulded, stopped frame. Ground floor windows retain remnants of drip moulds. A single-storey wing attached to the front left has a single light in its gable end, along with a door and a two-light casement on its left side. The rear of this addition includes a lean-to with a door. A lean-to on the right return conceals a blocked first-floor window, while a small lean-to is present at the rear. The rear elevation has a ground-floor four-light casement with a timber lintel and drip mould, set alongside a small two-light casement partially obscured by a large weathered buttress. Three further similar buttresses run along the rear. A blocked rear passage door can be seen, alongside a three-light casement with ovolo mullions and a drip mould; on the first floor are two 20th-century three-light casements with timber lintels to the left and right, and a small central two-light casement with an ovolo mullion and frame, all with a drip mould, alongside two 20th-century raking dormers. A brick lean-to with a door, glazed along the rear, is attached to the rear right of the kitchen wing. The interior features a heavy door with raised fillets and a moulded, stopped frame, potentially a former rear passage door re-set following the addition of the buttresses. Deep-chamfered and stopped beams are present at both ground and first-floor levels. The site of a former stair to the rear right of the passage has been replaced with a straight stair in two flights rising to attic level. The roof of the main range comprises five bays, with visible principal rafters and one row of purlins, along with collars above floor level. The front dormer features an ovolo-moulded mullion on the inside.
