Description
Dove Cottage and Mackereth's Cottage are two houses located in Lower Holker, likely built before 1797, with later alterations around 1840. The buildings are constructed of roughcast stone and have a slate roof. The south elevation features two storeys and three bays, with the centre bay being gabled. The windows have small-paned glazing; the ground floor centre bay has a simple Venetian window, while the other ground floor windows and the first-floor centre bay window have plaster label moulds. The gable includes a recessed panel with a relief of a cedar tree, and there are gable-end stacks. The left side of the building has a single-storey range to the rear, which includes a re-entrant open timber hipped porch. The right side has a gabled single-storey range to the rear with a plain re-entrant porch. The rear features similar windows with smaller panes. The cottages were given a more picturesque appearance in the 1840s to harmonize with the rest of the village.
