Description
Dove Cottage and Penbryn, originally a row of five almshouses, were built in 1844 and are now two separate dwellings. The structure is made of knapped flint with white brick dressings and features a roof covered in fishscale slates, although some plain slates from the mid-20th century are present at the rear. This single-storey building has a long range with gabled cross-wings at both ends and three small gables above doors in the center. There are two additional gabled doorways on the sides of the wings, one of which was extended in the mid-20th century to create a porch. The windows are casements, with two of three lights in the wings and four of two lights in the center, all dating from the mid-20th century and featuring segmental and shallow-pointed heads. There are two mid-20th century boarded doors, while one doorway has been replaced by a window. The building is topped with four pairs of tall octagonal white brick chimneys, with their bases set across the roof ridge. It was constructed by Sir Edward Kerrison for the poor and aged residents of Hoxne village, located near the site of the old guildhall.
