Description

High House is a house dating to circa 1500. It is timber-framed and rendered with a plain tiled roof. The house has two storeys and an attic. Casement windows are present, some with small panes of glass. A 19th-century single-storey, shallow-pitched gabled entrance addition projects forward and is weatherboarded, containing a 19th-century six-panel door, with the upper two panels glazed. An internal stack is incorporated within the building.

The house was originally built with an upper floor throughout, although the stack is clearly a later addition into the cross-passage, requiring the movement of one tie beam to accommodate it. At the right gable end, there is evidence of an original two-light shop window and a doorway. This part of the house contains an original cellar. Some substantial first-floor studding is visible. In the front wall is part of an original window with heavy square mullions, and a diamond-mullioned window is in the rear wall. Over the hall chamber is a steeply cambered tie beam with a mortise for a crown-post. The original roof was replaced circa 1600, likely when the attic was created. A newel staircase with two flights is present.

Renovations in 1986 to a small section of the right gable end at first floor level uncovered a panel of decorative framing featuring four reverse-curved braces forming a diamond pattern; this was subsequently covered by plaster.
