Description
The entrance gates and railings to Holker Hall, dating from around 1875, were designed by the architectural firm Paley and Austin. They are made of wrought iron and stone. The iron railings, which rest on a stone base, curve inward towards the paired gates, which are flanked by single gates. There are two large rusticated gate piers that feature entablatures and ogee caps topped with large, part-fluted ball finials. The gates themselves have richly decorated panels and cresting, with some elements gilded. The railings include square iron piers with openwork sides and finials, alternating with decorative panels that also have cresting. At the south end of the railings, there is a stone pier topped with a ball finial.
