Description
Whitegates Cottages are a pair of semi-detached houses built after 1849, possibly designed by George Webster. The cottages are constructed of roughcast stone with rock-faced stone dressings and feature a slate roof. They are two storeys high and consist of four bays. The stone base and quoins add to their architectural character. The windows have stone lintels and are fitted with two-light casements that include iron glazing bars arranged in octagon and square patterns, typical of the Holker estate. The first-floor windows are adorned with gablets that have decorative barge boards and finials. Each cottage has a porch with board doors and overlights, featuring open timber gabled roofs with finials and lattice-work sides. The buildings have gable-end stacks and a cross-axial stack. The returns display decorative barge boards, similar casements, and sashed windows with single glazing bars and horns. At the rear, there are two wings that also feature sashed windows.
