8/98 Dove Cottage and - Manifold Cottage

G.V. II Pair of cottages. c1855. By George Gilbert Scott. Coursed and squared limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings; shaped and hung clay tiles to attic storey; shaped clay tile roof with plain tile bands; ashlar ridge stacks. Vernacular revival and Swiss chalet style; pair of 2-room cottages forming a T-shape plan. 1 storey and attic; Dove Cottage to right, projecting gable end of Manifold Cottage to left; Dove Cottage: 1:1:1 windows; central 1½ storey porch with rustic and painted barge boards; ground floor has 2-light chamfered mullioned windows with chamfered surrounds containing casements; the 3 gabled dormer windows are single light casements; the central one has a bracketed sill, the two outer ones shaped and painted barge boards; central convex shoulder headed doorway. Gable end to right has a 3- light ground floor bay window with casements. Manifold Cottage: central 3-light ground floor bay window containing casements, with 3-sided roof; shaped barge boards. Return wall has one single light casement to ground floor and a gabled dormer with shaped and painted barge boards. An essential element of the picturesque estate village rebuilt by Scott in the 1850's.
