Description
Dove Cottage and Manifold Cottage are a pair of cottages built around 1855 by George Gilbert Scott. They are constructed from coursed and squared limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, featuring shaped and hung clay tiles on the attic storey and a shaped clay tile roof with plain tile bands, along with ashlar ridge stacks. The cottages display a vernacular revival and Swiss chalet style and are arranged in a T-shape plan, consisting of one storey and an attic.
Dove Cottage is located on the right and has a projecting gable end, while Manifold Cottage is on the left. Dove Cottage features a symmetrical facade with three windows on the ground floor, a central 1½ storey porch adorned with rustic and painted barge boards, and ground floor windows that are 2-light chamfered mullioned with chamfered surrounds containing casements. The three gabled dormer windows above are single light casements, with the central one having a bracketed sill and the outer ones featuring shaped and painted barge boards. The central doorway has a convex shoulder head. The gable end to the right includes a 3-light ground floor bay window with casements.
Manifold Cottage has a central 3-light ground floor bay window with casements and a three-sided roof, along with shaped barge boards. Its return wall features one single light casement on the ground floor and a gabled dormer with shaped and painted barge boards. These cottages are an important part of the picturesque estate village that Scott rebuilt in the 1850s.
