Description
The Cottage is a cottage built around 1855 by George Gilbert Scott. It is constructed from coursed and squared limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings. The attic storey is adorned with shaped and hung clay tiles, while the roof is shaped clay tiles with plain tile bands. There is an ashlar ridge stack located to the left of the center and an ashlar integral end stack. The design reflects a vernacular revival Swiss chalet style and has a two-room plan. The building is one storey with an attic and features a symmetrical arrangement of windows. The central porch is a one-and-a-half storey gabled structure with shaped and painted barge boards. The ground floor includes two-light chamfered mullioned windows with chamfered surrounds that contain casements. The three gabled dormer windows are single light casements, with the central one having a bracketed sill and the outer ones featuring shaped and painted barge boards. The doorway is a central convex shoulder-headed design. The Cottage is an important part of the picturesque estate village that Scott rebuilt in the 1850s.
