Description
Gatehouse Lodge is a lodge built around 1855 by George Gilbert Scott. It is constructed from coursed and squared limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings. The roof is made of shaped tiles with plain tile bands, and there are external end stacks of coursed and squared rubble topped with ashlar multi-gabled caps. The design reflects a Swiss cottage style in a Gothic manner, with a T-shaped plan. The building is one storey high and has 1:1 windows. To the left is a gabled crosswing that includes a 5-light bay window, with bracketed wooden lattice work on the gable, shaped barge boards, and a finial. The central gabled porch has wooden lattice work and barge boards, accessed by a flight of steps. To the right, there is a 3-light window. All window lights feature trefoiled heads and leaded casements. This lodge is an important part of the picturesque Alpine style estate village created by Scott.
