Description

This outbuilding, located to the east of White House Farmhouse, was originally a bastle house and dates from the late 16th century. It is constructed from large blocks of coursed red sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a graduated green slate roof. The building has two storeys and two bays.

The front of the outbuilding includes an upper floor entrance, which is now accessed by external stone steps. The lintel above this entrance has a pointed head with a straight chamfer. There are small original windows on either side of the entrance, each with chamfered surrounds and iron bars. The rear wall has later ground floor entrances, with three original small windows above, one of which has been filled in.

On the right end wall, there is an original ground floor entrance with a chamfered and rebated surround, which has a drawbar hole behind it. The upper floor features two 17th century two-light windows that are now filled, along with a small attic window above. The roof has a low pitch, suggesting it was originally steeper with an attic; one original corbel is visible on the right side. Inside, the original ground floor door has flanking corbels that support the original ceiling beam.
