Description
The churchyard gates, gate piers, and wall located to the north-east of the Church of St Michael date from the mid-19th century. They are constructed from red sandstone and wrought iron. The low sandstone rubble wall, featuring rounded coping, encloses the churchyard on all four sides. The entrance at the north-east corner has squared ashlar piers topped with moulded caps and ball finials. The railed iron gates are designed with intersecting scrolled corner brackets. An iron lamp overthrow is attached to the caps of each pier. Historical records from 1841 indicate that 18 shillings were paid to Thomas Westmorland for the new gate in the churchyard. This structure is listed partly for its group value with the nearby church.
