Description
The Church of St Michael is a Grade II* listed building, likely dating from the early 16th century, and built to replace an earlier church now submerged beneath the River Eden. It features large blocks of coursed red sandstone rubble and a graduated green slate roof with coped gables and kneelers. The church has a three-bay nave and a two-bay chancel. The north door of the nave was filled in 1786 when the west porch was constructed, and it was later replaced by the current south porch after 1840. The west end has a twin bellcote housing bells from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The nave includes double round head lancet windows, with one window replacing an earlier version. The chancel features a south door with a round head and a hollow chamfered surround, as well as 2-light trefoil head windows with hood moulds and a similar 3-light east window. A two-storey north vestry has a window that matches these designs. The east wall displays an inscribed stone with an illegible inscription, dated 1702.
Inside, the nave has a wood and plaster rib vaulted ceiling from the 19th century, while the chancel boasts a barrel vaulted wooden ceiling from the same period. Stained glass by Heaton, Butler and Bayne was added in 1900. A piscina may have been reused from the earlier church. The church also contains 19th and 20th-century wall plaques, including a heraldic one dedicated to Edwin Rowley from 1888. Notable artifacts in the porch include a hog back stone, a 9th-century decorated cross shaft in two pieces, and an incised grave slab, all recovered from the river at the site of the earlier church.
