Description
The Mains is a farmhouse dating from the early 19th century, featuring red sandstone rubble walls with flush quoins and a sandstone slate roof with stone chimney stacks. It stands two storeys high and has three bays. The entrance on the right has a top-glazed six-panel door set within a gabled sandstone porch, while the entrance on the left has a plain stone surround with a projecting cornice and reused quatrefoil panels above, believed to have originated from Kirkoswald Castle. The windows are three-light chamfered stone mullioned windows with small sash windows that include glazing bars. The building extends in an L-shape to the rear, which includes a round-headed staircase window. To the left, there is an adjoining outbuilding constructed from similar stonework and roofing, featuring two levels of slit vents and a single-storey extension at right angles to the front. Other outbuildings are not included in the listing.
