Description
The Bell Tower, located north-east of the Church of St Oswald, dates back to 1743, as indicated by the date on the weather vane. An inscription above the entrance states that the tower was rebuilt in 1893 in memory of John Henry Ransome, who was vicar from 1877 to 1892. The tower features coursed red sandstone rubble walls and has a flat roof that is not visible. It is a small square, two-storey structure with an angle stair turret. The lower stonework is from the 18th century, while the upper floor was rebuilt in the 19th century. The entrance has a plank door set in a roll-moulded surround. There are two-light mullioned bell openings with louvred stone vents, and the tower is topped with a battlemented parapet that includes angle projecting water spouts. The surrounding plinth is made from similar materials and includes steps leading to the entrance, with ball finials at the corners. The tower houses three inscribed bells, dated 1619, 1729, and 1892. This is the only detached church bell tower in north Cumbria.
