Description

Demesne Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1622, featuring the inscription "THOMAS BARTRAM (and) BENET BARTRAM F (ecerunt)/DEVS VVLT" above the entrance, which translates to "made this house; God wills it." The building has late 17th century additions and later alterations. It is constructed from large blocks of red sandstone rubble, likely sourced from the nearby Kirkoswald Castle, and has extensions with incised stucco walls on a painted stone plinth, accented by raised painted stone quoins and dressings. The roof is covered with graduated green slate, and the chimney stacks were rebuilt in the 19th century.

The original house consists of three storeys and three bays. The central entrance is blocked and features a roll moulded architrave with a dated and inscribed lintel. On either side of the entrance are enlarged 19th century two-pane sash windows, while a small original fire window to the right is also blocked. The first floor has Yorkshire windows with glazing bars, and the central window on the top floor is blocked, likely replacing original mullioned windows.

There is an extension at right angles to the main structure, forming a T-shape. This extension is two storeys high with a cellar and consists of five bays. The top glazed four-panel door is set in a moulded architrave with a cornice and a broken segmental pediment above it. Flanking steps lead up to the entrance in two flights. The extension features flat cross-mullioned windows in moulded architraves, and small square cellar windows are located in the end wall to the right. The 19th century extension and farm buildings are not included in the listing.
