Description
The Cavendish Arms Public House, likely built in the 18th century with later additions, is located on Cavendish Street in Lower Allithwaite. This public house features roughcast stone walls and a slate roof, standing two stories tall with five bays. The outer two bays project and are taller than the rest. The first three bays have a frieze and bracketed eaves. Most windows are sash style, with vertical glazing bars; the third bay on the ground floor has a triple window with sashes and glazing bars. The fourth and fifth bays contain windows with small-paned fixed glazing and opening lights, with a large entrance between them that has loading doors above and a plate glass window on the return. On the first floor, there are sash windows, with glazing bars in the fourth bay. The segmental-headed entrance features panelled pilasters, a consoled flat canopy, and a six-panel door, topped with a fanlight that has spandrel fan motifs. A double-sided mounting block nearby displays the date 1837. To the left of the main building is an outbuilding with large sliding doors and a loading door, and a further outbuilding with both large and small entrances. The structure includes cross-axial and gable-end stacks, while the rear has low gabled wings and a flat-roofed extension. Inside, there are some stop-chamfered beams.
