Description

A house, likely dating from the late 17th century with a second floor added in the mid-19th century, stands on the north side of The Square in Lower Allithwaite, near Cartmel. It is built of roughcast stone with a slate roof. The structure is three stories and four bays wide, with the fourth bay forming part of a gatehouse. The roofline features a top frieze, bracketed eaves, and a moulded gutter. The ground floor windows in the first and third bays have paired sash windows with horns. The fourth bay has a small-paned bow window with a cornice. The first-floor windows also have paired sash windows with horns to the first and third bays, while the fourth bay has a small-paned casement window. The second-floor windows have 3-centred heads that cut into the frieze and are sashed, with the fourth bay featuring vertical glazing bars. The entrance to the second bay is marked by an architrave and panelled reveals, a modillioned cornice, and a four-panel door. The entrance to the fourth bay has a bracketed flat canopy and paired three-fielded-panel doors. A gable-end stack and a cross-axial stack are present.
