Description

The Chetham Arms is a public house dated 1746 and has been extended. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with a slate roof that features one ridge chimney and two gable chimneys. The building has a double pile, three-bay plan, with a fourth bay added at the right end. It stands three storeys tall, with the original structure being symmetrical. The central entrance has a panelled door in a plain surround, above which is a large panel displaying the Chetham arms and the letters "HC" and "1746". The ground floor has two sashed windows with altered glazing, while the first floor features three sashed windows. Above these, there are three low windows with glazing bars; the outer ones are horizontal sliding sashes and the centre window is fixed. The fourth bay is made of watershot masonry and has one coupled sliding sash window on each of the upper floors, with a ground floor window that has been reduced to a centre sashed window without glazing bars. The rear of the building is of little interest, and the interior has been altered. Adjoining the left side, but not included in this listing, is a former stable with a courtroom above, which has now been converted into cottages.
