Description

This is an 18th-century house, altered over time, located on High Street in Turton. Originally, a two-bay house, it included a rear extension that was formerly used as a school but has now been demolished. The exterior is built of watershot coursed sandstone with quoins, and has an ashlar porch and a stone slate roof with gable chimneys. The facade is almost symmetrical, though slightly offset to the right is a narrow, two-story porch in a Jacobean style. The porch has a chamfered doorway with a rectangular fanlight and hoodmould, along with a tall two-light mullioned window at the first floor, a carved crest above this window, a steeply-pitched gable with scrolled eaves coping, and a large finial at the apex—this porch section likely dates from the early 19th century and is similar to a feature at Clough House Farmhouse. The main facade has two mullioned windows on each floor, each with three tall lights, glazing bars, and hoodmoulds, likely contemporary with the porch. A long high wall continues to the rear of the right return, breaking forward slightly and incorporating an elaborate arched Gothick doorway with an ogee hoodmould, and a panel displaying the Chetham arms above the doorway. The interior features a central hallway, likely a 19th-century addition, with a quarter-turn staircase at the rear. Each room has a stone fireplace. On the first floor, there are timber-framed partition walls, batten and board doors, and blocked doorways in the rear wall.
