Description

The George and Dragon is a public house located on a sloping site in Kendal, likely dating from the 18th century, with a front that was possibly refaced in the 19th century and embellished in the early 20th century. The exterior features incised stucco set on a rusticated plinth, with cavetto eaves and a string course, and a moulded cast-iron gutter supported by brackets. The roof is covered with graduated slate and has two gabled dormers. The building is two storeys high and has three bays. The entrance consists of a panelled door with a rectangular fanlight, which was reopened in 1915 after being blocked around 1880. To the left of the door are paired sash windows, while to the right is a single sash window. A semicircular-headed wagon arch on the far right provides access to the rear, featuring a rusticated surround with moulded imposts and a projecting keystone. There is a moulded frame between the floors, with three sashes and two narrow, upright moulded frames on the first floor, all set within architraves.
