Description

This is a 1863 shop and cottage, built on a sloping site in Kendal Market Place by Stephen Shaw for Robert Skelton, with later alterations. The building is constructed of coursed, squared rubble with quoins, and features sill bands to the upper floors. It has a moulded cast-iron gutter supported by brackets, a graduated slate roof, and a stone chimney to the east end, with a central gabled dormer. The building is three storeys high and comprises three bays (one bay wider than the others). The original shop front has been re-glazed, and the arcading has been removed; a part-glazed door with a rectangular fanlight is located to the left of the window, and there is cellar access below. The door is surrounded by a corniced wooden frame with pilasters. Each floor above has two sashes, while the south return has a single, narrow sash to each floor. A cottage door is located on the north return (the second door opens off the south side of the rear passage). The upper floors of the north return have single, narrow sashes, as does the bay set back over the passage on the left.
