Description
Nos 27 and 29, along with the entrance to Yard 31, are shops located on the south side of Kendal Market Place. They were built in the early 18th century and re-fronted in the early 19th century, with later additions and alterations. The exterior is wet-dashed, featuring a moulded cast-iron gutter and a graduated slate roof with stone end chimneys set diagonally at the east end. The building has three storeys and three bays, with corniced wooden shop fronts that have panelled pilasters.
No 27 has a part-glazed door with a plate-glass window to the right, while No 29 has a part-glazed door with a plate-glass window to the left. The entrance to Yard 31 is located on the far left and includes two panelled doors and a window on the west side of the passage. Each upper floor has three tripartite sashes, all with glazing bars, some of which are original; there is a 20th-century casement window inserted on the first floor. The Royal Commission on Historical Monuments for Westmorland noted two early 18th-century fireplaces and a staircase within the building.
