Description
Nos. 49 and 50 Market Place are two houses that have been converted into two shops. They date from the early 18th century but have undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The exterior features painted rough render with painted ashlar dressings and a boulder plinth. The roofs are covered with graduated stone flags and have stone ridges and chimneys. The building is three storeys high, with two bays for No. 49 and one bay for No. 50.
No. 49, located on the left, has a low tooled stone surround framing a central partly-glazed flushed door. To the right, there are double doors inserted under a wide flat stone lintel, likely from a former shop window. The building features late 19th-century sash windows on the left and upper floors, all with projecting stone sills. The flat stone lintels are present except for the smaller second-floor windows, which have lintels in the eaves, suggesting the front may have been heightened. Stone eaves gutter brackets are also visible, along with end chimneys. There is a yard entrance at the extreme right.
No. 50, on the right, may have originally been part of No. 49. It has a 20th-century door on the left, a shop window on the right, and a large window on the first floor. The roof is steeply pitched and has a continuous ridge with No. 49, featuring a chimney at the right end. The interior of No. 49 reveals beams on the ground floor, but other floors have not been inspected.
