Description
This building in Middleton in Teesdale, originally one house and now divided into two, dates from the early 18th century. It is constructed of squared sandstone rubble, with some courses of varying thickness, and has a boulder plinth, ashlar dressings, and millstone grit quoins. The roof is of graduated stone flags with stone gable coping. The building likely has a hearth-passage entry plan.
It is two storeys high and has four bays. A 20th-century door is located in the third bay, set within a bolection-moulded surround featuring a pulvinated frieze and cornice. Late 19th-century sash windows are found in the first two bays, set in plain stone surrounds. A 20th-century door and window are present in the fourth bay, beneath a plain sash window with a flat stone lintel and projecting stone sill. Quoins are visible on the right-hand side only. The roof features a right gable coping with moulded kneelers, and three ridge chimneys with strings, positioned at each end and to the left of the 18th-century door.
The rear elevation showcases a segmental-headed stone surround to a rear-central door within an outshut, flanked by 20th-century extensions that are not historically significant.
