Description

The Hodgson tomb, located approximately one metre south of the chancel of the Church of St. Mary, is a Grade II listed headstone dedicated to Rev. George Hodgson, who died in 1761 at the age of 36. The tomb features a sandstone ashlar slab that stands about 0.6 metres high. It has a bracket-shaped top above a moulded rectangular panel, which displays an inscription and verse that reads: "Hou lovd hou valu'd once/avails the not to whom/Related or by whom/begot A heap of Dust/alone Remains of the is/all thou art and all the/Proud shall be."
