Description
The Old Rectory is a rectory that has been converted into a private house. It likely dates from the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the early and mid-19th century. The building is constructed of sandstone rubble, with some millstone grit and painted ashlar dressings, as well as grit quoins. The roof is covered with graduated stone flags, mostly painted, along with some corrugated asbestos, and features flat stone gable copings.
The building has an irregular plan, consisting of a main block with a basement, one storey, and an attic, which has three bays. There is a set-back right wing that has two low storeys and two bays, along with a one-storey, one-bay projecting extension on the right. The main block is accessed by six steps leading up to a central door that has been renewed, which is boarded and features Gothick-shaped glazed panels beneath a thin rendered lintel. To the left of the door is a large 16-pane sash window inserted under a narrower grit lintel, while a corniced oriel window has been added to the right. The basement includes two horizontal sliding sash windows with glazing bars located below the oriel.
The roof features three half dormers with Gothick-headed glazing bars set under high gables, along with gable copings and end chimneys, one of which is a large square-section external stack on the right. The left return of the building has two irregular gables. The right wing has a renewed Gothick door framed in a painted architrave on the right, a blocked two-light window with recessed mullions on the left, and a chimney at the left end. The exterior of this wing projects forward and includes a window in a blocked door on the inner return, as well as a renewed sash window with glazing bars located under the front gable. The back of the wing is covered with a stone-flagged roof.
