Description
No. 55, located in Middleton in Teesdale Market Place, is a house and shop dating from the mid-18th century, with early 19th-century alterations. The building is constructed of coursed rubble featuring large quoins and painted ashlar dressings, topped with a roof made of graduated Lakeland slates, which has a stone ridge and a coursed squared sandstone chimney. It stands three storeys tall and has three bays, with the third bay being wider.
On the left side, there is a six-panel door set in a plain stone surround. The shop occupies the two right bays and features a recessed central door, with four rows of three panes, and windows that have four rows of five panes, all beneath a narrow fascia and cornice. The first-floor sashes are 16-pane and have plain stone surrounds, while the second-floor sashes are 12-pane, with wide flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills. The roof includes a chimney at the right end with a string course.
