Description
Nos. 41 and 43 on Elm Hill are a pair of buildings dating from the 17th century and later, now used as a shop. The structures are mostly rendered, featuring timber framing with plaster infill on the upper floor of No. 41, and have a pantile roof with two brick chimneys. They stand two storeys tall, with an attic and cellar.
The facade is divided into two parts. No. 41 has an early 19th-century shop front with three bays, marked by fluted elongated Tuscan columns. The central entrance is a half-glazed door with small panes, flanked by shop windows that also have glazing bars. The jettied first floor displays close studding with a middle rail that once supported a full-width window, now blocked; this window originally contained five pairs of ogee-leaded lights with rosettes in the spandrels, of which two pairs have been replaced with iron casements and leaded lights. A box cornice runs along the top. The gabled dormer features a mullioned and transomed window with an iron casement and leaded lights, while the bargeboards are adorned with turned pendants.
No. 43 has a half-glazed door to the left, with panelled reveals and a doorcase supported by plain pilasters. There are two ground-floor sash windows with glazing bars. The first floor includes one sash window with glazing bars and another mullioned window with leaded lights and an iron casement. To the right, a large gabled dormer has an iron casement with leaded lights, while a smaller gable to the left features glazing bar sashes. Both gables have plain bargeboards. These properties were originally part of a large courtyard house on the site of Wright's Court. No. 41 displays a cast iron plaque dated 1842.
