Description

The Strangers Club is a building dating from the 16th century and later, originally used for purposes that are not known but now serves as a club. It features a timber frame construction, with the ground floor rendered and the first floor displaying exposed close studding filled with herringbone red brick. The roof is covered with pantiles, and there is a rebuilt brick chimney. The building stands two storeys high with a cellar on the right side and includes a first-floor jetty.

There are six first-floor windows, and a left carriage entrance to Crown Alley showcases a finely carved bressummer that also displays a merchant's mark and the arms of the Mercers Company. Flanking the entrance are two identical Tudor-style doors, which have ribs and iron studs set in moulded surrounds. These doors are positioned beside two large windows, which feature moulded mullions and transoms (heavily restored) and consist of six and ten leaded lights, respectively. The larger window is said to have been re-set from the first floor.

On either side of the building, there are smaller diamond-lattice casements from the 20th century, as well as additional casements on the first floor. At the rear, there is a projecting timber-framed wing from the 16th century, which includes a gable-end brick chimney, a two-centred arch, and a casement with mullions and transoms. Inside, the building has moulded beams and a fireplace that was introduced from another location.
