Description

This is an 18th-century house, now used as two shops, located on the south-east side of Elm Hill. The building is constructed of red brick with a rendered plinth, a pantile roof, and a gable-end chimney on the right side. Side panels of the passage feature light timber spacers between brick panels. The house extends over three storeys, with two first-and-second-floor windows and a blind window on each floor above the passage entrance to Norris Court Gardens. The main entrance includes a plank door within a rubbed brick arch, flanked by two half-glazed doors. No. 39 has a simple doorcase with ribbed pilasters. The doorcase of No. 37 has been incorporated into a 19th-century shop front, featuring round-section mullions and transoms with grape decorations at the tops of the mullions. Sash windows with flat rubbed brick arches are present throughout, with glazing bars in No. 39 and larger panes in No. 37. Two cast-iron plaques are affixed to No. 39, marked H/S.P/1834 and H/S.P/1814.
