Description

Nos. 28 and 30 Elm Hill are a complex building with a history spanning from the 15th century to the early 19th century, originally with an unknown purpose, and now used as shops. The core of the building is a 15th-century undercroft; the visible facade dates primarily from the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries. The timber frame is clad in yellow mathematical tiles, topped by a pantiled roof. The building is three storeys high, with six first-floor windows. A flattened carriage arch is centrally positioned and flanked by 20th-century shop fronts with glazing bars. The first floor has a jetty. Sash windows with glazing bars are set within moulded wooden architraves on the first floor; the second floor has pivoted windows with glazing bars, all with flat rendered lintels. A 17th-century range of flint and brick rubble at the rear of No. 28 features mullioned and transomed casements with iron frames, leaded lights, and pale green glass. A late 18th-century red brick range extends from the rear of No. 30. The interior has undergone extensive alterations; a first-floor room facing the street includes restored and rearranged panelling dating back to approximately 1800. In the rear wing of No. 28 are chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. Below No. 30 there’s an extensive series of connected chambers forming a vaulted profile, most likely from the 15th century. This represents one of the most extensive barrel-vaulted undercrofts in Norwich.
