Description

The Market Hall, built in 1887 by public subscription to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, incorporates the entrance to number 16. It is constructed of hammer-dressed rubble with quoins, with the ground floor featuring coursed stone and the upper floors utilising snecked stone. A cornice separates the ground and first floors, a string divides the first and second floors, and an interrupted string sits below the eaves band. The moulded cast-iron gutter includes a lion’s head near the right-hand end. The roof is covered with graduated slate.

The building is three storeys high with three bays. To the left, a rusticated pier and responds support wrought-iron double gates, each lintel featuring a weathered inscription (partly renewed) with a central cartouche. The entrance to number 16 is located on the right and features a panelled door and a semicircular fanlight within a surround that has a projecting keystone. Sashes are set within architraves; the first-floor windows are tall and have segmentally-pedimented frames housing shields on either side of the central window. Cast-iron balconies, supported by stone brackets, extend from the second floor, bearing the inscription "PUBLIC MARKET" split to either side of the central window.
