Description
Nos 54 and 56 on Branthwaite Brow in Kendal are two shops situated one above the other on a sloping site. They date back to the 17th century and have undergone later additions and alterations. The building is constructed from coursed, squared rubble and features a battered south end with a slobbered finish. It has a moulded cast-iron gutter and a graduated slate roof with stone end chimneys, the northern chimney having rounded corners.
The structure is three storeys high and consists of four bays. The lower shop on the right has a recessed 20th-century door with a contemporary iron grille in front, a small fixed window to the left, and a bow window to the right, both with glazing bars. To the left of the stone steps leading to the upper shop's entrance, there is a two-light wood-mullioned casement. The entrance to the upper shop features a recessed 20th-century glazed door with a bay window on brackets immediately to the right, and sash windows to the left and far right. The second floor has three wood-mullioned casements with two, three, and four lights, and a wrought-iron bracket between the middle and right-hand windows supports a 20th-century sign.
